Waimakariri Riding Club (WRC) is committed to the welfare of every horse participating in WRC activities, including rallies, hacknix rides, club competitions, training events, and any activity where members represent the club.
At all times, the welfare of the horse is paramount.
We recognise that involving horses in sport and leisure activities is a privilege that carries responsibilities. Every member has a duty to treat horses with care, respect, and consideration for their physical and emotional wellbeing.
WRC recognises that horse welfare includes:
Physical wellbeing
Psychological wellbeing
Social wellbeing
Environmental wellbeing
We believe that horses participating in WRC activities should have positive experiences and should not be subjected to unnecessary stress, harm, neglect, or discomfort.
WRC is committed to continually developing our understanding of horse behaviour, learning theory, and equine welfare. We encourage members to do the same and to apply this knowledge in ways that promote positive experiences for horses.
All members share responsibility for maintaining high standards of horse welfare.
Members are expected to:
Treat horses with kindness and respect.
Use training and handling methods that prioritise horse welfare.
Ensure horses are fit and healthy for the activities they undertake.
Monitor horses for signs of pain, distress, illness, injury, fatigue, or discomfort.
Act promptly when welfare concerns arise.
If a member has concerns about the welfare of a horse participating in a WRC activity, they should raise those concerns with the WRC Head Coach, an event official, or a WRC Committee Member as soon as practicable.
WRC will take reasonable steps to investigate welfare concerns and take appropriate action where necessary.
WRC aims to foster a culture where good horsemanship, education, safety, and horse welfare are valued equally, and where every horse participating in club activities is treated with dignity and care.
